As a franchisee, you purchase "a replica of the franchisor's company", and agree to follow their specific operating procedures.

You purchase rights to use the franchisor's trademarks, trade names, and standard methods of operations, that is their "trade secrets". This is usually a flat fee...known as a "franchise fee".

Once your business is open and running, you pay monthly fees based on a percentage of "gross revenues",** (these fees are sometimes called "royalties" and range from 1 to 15% of gross sales).

In return, a well-managed franchisor will provide you with: public relations and advertising programs; "Grand Opening" assistance, new product research and development; lead generation; management training and consultation; profitability reviews; financial evaluations; and new sales and marketing initiatives.

While you lessen your risk by purchasing a franchise, you must have the financial ability to maintain your lifestyle while you are building your business.

Statistics show that 95% of franchises succeed, as compared to a 97% failure rate for all small businesses. However, there are no guarantees of success. The same principals appy here as with any start-up business. You must perservere to succeed.

** Royalties, not based on net earnings can be a substantial cost to you. (EX: Your franchise grosses $200,000 a year, and you are required to pay a 5 or 6 percent royalty...that's $10,000 - $12,000 each year you pay your franchisor.)
